Everything You Need to Know About TikTok-Including What’s Going on with the Potential Ban

OK. Break it down for me. What is TikTok?
- Tiktok is an app that’s a “destination for short-form videos” with a focus on content creators.
- “TikToks” are 15–60 second videos created by either:
- Sequentially editing clips from your camera roll together or
- The videos are captured within the app.
3. Where do you see content on TikTok?
- The ‘For You’ Page: Where any TikToker’s content could appear for anyone. TikTok recently disclosedhow their ‘For You’ page algorithm is weighted based on user interactions (videos you like and share, accounts you follow, etc.), video information (captions, sounds, hashtags), as well as device and account information (language preference, device type, etc.).
- People You Follow: This feed will remind you more of Instagram, as it shows you the videos from TikTokers you follow.
4. So what’s the appeal of TikTok vs. other social media platforms?
- The difference between TikTok and other popular social media apps is that when it comes to TikTok, having a large following doesn’t matter as much. On TikTok, making relevant, hilarious and engaging content consistently (if you’re a pro TikToker we’re talking like 4–8x/day!) is far more valuable in terms of social media clout than any other approach.
5. Who’s even on TikTok?
- The median ages on TikTok are between 16 and 24 — so, basically it’s a whole lot of Gen-Z. But don’t worry, you’re never too old to be on TikTok; there are hashtags to follow like #Over30, #Over40, and so on, for the older crowd that has been joining the app as of late. The algorithm will figure out soon enough that you’re in this cohort anyways!
- For the most part, you’ll see dancers, video-editors, comedians and lip-syncers. But TikTok isn’t just for dancing, even though that is one of its most popular creator types.
